Winter is here and we need to look after ourselves. We need to nourish and take care of ourselves more than the other seasons, as our immune system is being challenged more and need more love and care, we should take some measures to keep our energy level up and also boost our system before we start feeling a bit sick or down. If we dont boost our system before we do feel sick, then the recovery process will take longer, so my approach is to boost your system everyday even though if you feel energised and well, and think you dont need it.

My favourite routine for looking after my immune system and health, is my homemade ginger, turmeric, chilli shots. It is so simple and easy to make and it is packed with goodies for your body.

YOU NEED

Fresh ginger

Fresh turmeric &/or  grounded

Fresh chilli

Pepper

Orange or clementine peel – I add this during the winter period.

Everything is chopped into pieces, the size is not important.
Pepper can be crushed or whole peppercorns.
Fill up a pot with water.
Add the ingredients to the pot.
Making sure you wash the orange or clementine peel first before adding it to the brew.
Let it simmer for a few hours, almost at boiling point.
If you have the time, put a lid on and allow it to cool down for a few hours or even overnight.

Then strain the brew into bottles. You can put all the little pieces into a blender / juicer and add the remaining liquid you get from that into the bottles you have filled up.

Store the brew in bottles in a cool place, it keeps for several months as long as its stored cold. However most likely you´ll finish it in a month or so because its so yummy.

We are moving into the darkest time of year here in the northern hemisphere, days are becoming shorter and the dark is sneaking up on us. Most of us will feel less motivated and need more sleep and rest than usual. all of us who have lived through these long winters know that the winter depression can be very difficult and hard to tackle. I experienced my absolute worst winter last year, therefore this season I´m preparing for it so I´m very mindful of how I´m approaching this season, making sure it will be much better at looking after myself and listen to my body.

From my own experience I´m very certain that most people can avoid being very negatively influenced by the winter and the darkness, the problem is that most of us are not listing to our bodies. We keep pushing ourselves, and keep working just as hard and just as much so we neglect that our bodies actually need more attention during this season.

MY MINDFUL TIPS TO HAVE A BETTER WINTER SEASON

Sleep more
Allow yourself to sleep more if you feel that you actually need it.

Take vitamins & super foods
Specially vitamin D, making sure you start before its midwinter so it starts working before its to late. I also take spirulina, maca and one pill that has the things that I might not get enough off on a vegan diet, B12 and iodine. I also make my own healthy turmeric, chilli and ginger brew and take at least one shot every day.

Sauna & fjord swimming
If I knew about this last winter, omg it would have made such a difference to my health. Try to go to the sauna every week or at least twice a month. Using the fjord sauna here in Oslo is an amazing relaxing and warming experience, and swimming into the ice cold fjord makes the whole experience thrilling, not to forget how great it is for your health to sauna and ice bath.

Spend time with people who gives you positive energy
Spending our time wisely is something I´ve really worked on this past year. Truly listening to myself and what I feel after being around different people. Honestly, just be selfish and start spending time with the people who actually gives you the glow and positive energy you need. Specially during the winter months, but also the rest of the year. This life is so short waisting our time with people who dont give you what you need.

Eat healthy warming foods
Eating warming foods during winter is really important for your health and your body. Making sure you are giving your body a lot of nutrition and specially eating warming foods, like stews, soups and curries. For many of us our digestive system is slower in the winter and its harder to digest food, specially raw uncooked food.

Work less and spend more time outside
To most people this is a hard one, because we are actually expected to work just as much during the winter months, even though we are getting way less energy, because the sun is one of the most important sources to energy. I personally choose to work less, earn less but feel so much greater, be happier and find more peace in my life. This way I can be outside in the middle of the day some days, and actually get some natural light and on good days sunlight. I do really recommend this lifestyle, but it needs to be your choice.

Go away to a sunny place
Lets be honest with ourselves, 5 months of winter is just a bit to long, so make sure you manage to go away, at least for two weeks, soak some sun, relax and recharge your batteries.
Me personally choose to work less, earn a bit less money but go travel for longer periods at a time, because you dont need to go on an expensive holiday.

As human-beings we all chase for happiness. We want to feel and be happy at every moment of our life, however this is an unrealistic goal. Being happy is constant work in progress, and for most of us the state of happiness is a very short lived moment. A moment that passes quickly, the short loved happy moment is there for you to briefly touch. It is completely normal for all humans to go through phases of short lived happiness. The reason is that we all chase for happiness, so to obtain happiness something special  have to occur in your life, in order for you to feel happy.  It might be going to a concert, eating dinner at a fancy restaurant or buying a new dress. All these things are so called special events that you allow yourself to have, in order for you to feel better. Feel happy. Therefor for most people happiness is a short lived moment, because most of us need those special events to happen for us to become happy. So a few days after the dinner party, you are  no longer living on the state of happiness you felt during the dinner, during eating exiting foods.  You are back at maybe just being between happy and unhappy, a state that you cant really define.

I truly belive that our chase for happiness is not helping us improve our lives but rather making us less happy and content in life.

Maybe our idea of happiness may itself be the main obstacle keeping us from true happiness?

“breathing mindfully, you simply
enjoy your in-breath an your out-breath.
You bring the mind home to the body, and you realise
that you are alive, still alive, and that is a wonder.
To be alive is the greatest of all miracles.
We have to learn to live our life deeply as human being.
We need to live every breath deeply,
so that we have peace, JOY, and freedom as we breathe.”
Thich Nhat Hanh

My thoughts are that; instead of chasing for happiness we should start connecting with joy. Happiness in my opinion is state of where you have to stay, but joy is more about feeling great about things in life. Therefor its no pressure of staying in that state, feeling joy will come easier than staying in the state of happiness. Joy can be so easily obtained, if you have the right mindset or you mange to work with your mindset, you can find joy in all the little things in life. The more we work with our mindset and start paying attention to everything around us, and manage to see the wonders of life, we will be able to feel and experience joy, feeling joy without the pressure of staying in that state. Joy can also happen when you are at a place in your life that you are not particularly exited about or happy with. I find that joy comes easier than happiness. If I am feeling sad for something, maybe just playing one song that I really love will bring me joy in that moment, even though I´m not feeling the state of happiness the song will bring me joy, even in a state of misery.

Changing your mindset might take a little time, you will probably fall back in the habit of chasing happiness, but when you realise that you are feeling down because you where on the path of chasing happiness again. Bring yourself back to working with your mindset, and start appreciating little things again, allowing yourself to feel joy over being able to eat food every day. having a job, being able to feel everything that you feel. Joy of life itself. It might feel a bit strange in the beginning, allowing the feelings of joy from things that you normally wouldn´t care so much for before.

Go out, start experiencing life on your body and start diving into joy and explore how joy will make your life better and bring more contentment into your life.
